Poor Juno Mak. Had there been an award for the 'most-booed newcomer' in Canto-pop La-La land this year, the 18-year-old would surely have won it hands down.

Just what has the public got against this teenage upstart?

His unpopularity was evident at the three major end-of-year music awards held recently.

Young Post attended all three functions - Metro's Hit Awards, Commercial Radio's Ultimate Song Chart Awards and TVB's Jade Solid Gold Awards - and could not help but notice the amount of booing the new artist generated from the audience.

Even before Metro handed Mak the 'Hit King of the Newcomer' award, the house was filled with noises of discontent. And when he lost out to a mainland singer in the 'Ultimate Newcomer (Male)' category, the audience switched from booing to upbeat applause.

At the TVB's award presentation ceremony, the reception was more or less the same when he picked up an obscure 'best interpretation' award - with the booing audible on every TV set.
