Out-take intake

Innovative photography, excellent styling, talented hair and make-up artists, an inspiring model and more than a little luck are the makings of a great fashion shoot. But even on those rare sittings when everything goes right, what one sees on the page is only half of the story. For every picture published, many are rejected - not necessarily because they are bad, but because they simply do not meet the criteria or space constraints set by a magazine. Unseen Vogue: The Secret History Of Fashion Photography, by British Vogue creative director Robin Derrick and curator Robin Muir, brings together the best of these 'out-takes' from the 1.5 million pictures in British Vogue's archive. Featuring anecdotes, correspondence and never-before-seen photographs (as well as a few errors of judgment) by photographers such as David Bailey, Cecil Beaton, Guy Bourdin, Nick Knight, Herb Ritts and Mario Testino, the book offers a glimpse behind glamour's glossy veneer. Buy it for US$42 (HK$328) from www.amazon.com.

Funked out

Tired of the tatty, second-hand T-shirts with ridiculous logos beloved of Indie bands? So are New York designers Chrissie Miller and Shawn Regruto. This is why the pair, who created the 'Models Suck' shirt worn by Naomi Campbell in the Spike Lee movie Girl Six, have started a custom-order line that has vintage flavour but none of the funk. Using dead-stock materials, they will whip up a T-shirt of your choice starting from US$50 (HK$390). Make it as idiosyncratic as you like, or copy Courtney Love and hip-hop artist Eve, who have already placed orders for matching 'Smacka Bootlegger' T-shirts. Magic lotion

If doctors really know best, then the Z. Bigatti skincare range is exactly what the plastic surgeon ordered. Developed by a team of top American dermatologists, including celebrity favourite Dr Jennifer Biglow, the brand has just gone on sale at Seibu (Pacific Place, Admiralty) after great success in Japan. Its star product: Re-Storation Skin Treatment, an all-in-one facial lotion said to diminish fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and enlarged pores after only one application. Its magic ingredients? Alpha and beta hydroxy acids, grape seed and green tea extracts, and an entire alphabet of vitamins. Giorgio Armani, Naomi Campbell and Annette Bening are all fans. At $1,350 for 56 grams it should be used sparingly.
