ON THE FIRST DAY of Lunar New Year, after 1.30am to be exact, find a yellow bag, walk north-west and buy something - anything - to put in it. Once the mission has been accomplished, head home and go to bed, placing the knotted bag on your pillow above your head. This will bring good luck in the Year of the Goat, advises Chinese astrologer Edwin Ma Lai-wah. With good luck assured, try not to overindulge or splash out unnecessarily. The Year of the Goat won't be great for parties, Ma warns. Hong Kongers should hang on to their wallets and stick to 'lighter' forms of entertainment and relaxation that don't cost a packet, he says. But the astrologer says it is crucial to welcome the New Year with a big smile and not to wallow in negative sentiments. 'We've seen the worst, and everything should look up from now,' Ma says. 'With everything hitting rock bottom in 2001, 2003 should continue to improve from last year.' What your sign says: RAT (born in 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996): Watch out for obstacles in your love life. A third party may creep in if you neglect your loved one. Although money won't be a problem, try not to over-indulge. OX (1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997): Don't just work all the time - lift your head and look at the world outside. Accept and welcome any changes, but most importantly, have fun. Creative activities such as karaoke, acting and ballroom dancing would help to soothe your worried mind. TIGER (1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998): A great year for love: marriage is on the cards for singles and children for couples. When not working, try some adventurous activities and competitive sports to fulfil your need to be challenged. Be careful with money. RABBIT (1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999): Expect a tumultuous love life - try to enjoy the lows as well as the highs. Speak up and be frank with your partner. To relax, stick with quieter forms of entertainment, such as going to the movies and reading books, to prevent any further aggravation to your already troubled mind. DRAGON (1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000): Try not to think too much and stop banging your head against a brick wall. This is a wonderful year for love - don't run away from it. Go to lots of parties, meet new people and travel. It's a year for fun, so don't just sit at home. SNAKE (1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001): Although patience is a virtue, wait no longer - this year is a good one for setting plans in action. You will do well financially and share the fruits of your hard work with a loved one - so be romantic and happy together. HORSE (1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002): Even though you may not feel like going out, try to get away once in a while. Go for a hike, get some fresh air. Expect a year of obstacles and opposition. Know thy enemy - a useful activity would be people-watching in shopping centres and cafes. GOAT (1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003): Your partner will be in the mood to go out, splash out and have fun. Join in. Don't expect too much to happen this year. Just go with the flow, and don't put too much pressure on yourself to do well. MONKEY (1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992): With the help of a lucky star illuminating your path, you should do well financially. Although you may yearn to be alone, try to be sociable. Expect arguments in relationships, though they should not be too damaging. ROOSTER (1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993): There will be endless social obligations - try to avoid unnecessary ones. Stay clear of places of sexual temptation, such as girlie bars and hostess clubs. If you invest wisely and patiently and are not over-confident, this should be a prosperous year. DOG (1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994): This is a good year for going to art galleries and theatres, but stay clear of noisy functions and unnecessary challenges. In relationships, an old partner may leave and a new one could appear. Try not to swim against the tide and accept that this is not your year. Wear something light yellow to ward off bad luck. PIG (1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995): Leave plenty of room for manoeuvre in every aspect of your life. You are bound to overspend so try to cut back: don't always eat out, and rent movies instead of going to the cinema. You will be the source of arguments in relationships, so try to control your temper.
