United States President George W Bush (below) gave a speech on Tuesday standing against what appeared to be a backdrop of cardboard boxes stamped 'MADE IN USA'.
But the boxes, in a St Louis, Missouri, warehouse, were actually painted on a large screen behind the president. The real boxes in the warehouse, according to a Washington Times report, were stamped 'MADE IN CHINA'. Other 'MADE IN CHINA' labels in the warehouse were pasted over with blank white labels.
White House deputy press secretary Claire Buchan later acknowledged the stickers were affixed intentionally but attributed the move to an overzealous volunteer. However, she refused to explain who had brought in the 'MADE IN USA' backdrop.
