The Jockey Club is considering the adequacy of its jockey numbers as the rash of suspensions continues and two European stars are under pressure to cut their contracts short. Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, the Jockey Club's director of racing, said yesterday the Club has been forced to consider the short- and medium-term problems ahead and may invite as many as three new riders to join Hong Kong racing for a brief period. 'Things were already made quite tight by the long suspended list but now we will be forced to look at a solution, with two or perhaps even three riders to come for short stints, as Christophe Soumillon and Jamie Spencer are being asked to return home perhaps as early as the beginning of March,' he said. 'Although a number of the suspended riders are due to return in early February, and Anton Marcus will be back around the same time, having two more riders leaving would leave us in an unacceptable position in the lead up to the Derby whereby we could not afford any injuries or suspensions for our riders.' Soumillon - first jockey to the Aga Khan in France - and Luca Cumani-retained Jamie Spencer are licensed until the Derby meeting on March 23. 'With the good weather in Europe, the returning horses are more forward than is often the case at this time of year,' Engelbrecht-Bresges said. 'Both jockeys are going well and we hope they will be able to complete their time here, but we also have to respect that they are retained riders and therefore subject to some extent to those contracts at home.' The riding ranks have been thinned by Pat Smullen's return to Ireland after tomorrow's meeting, the news that Craig Williams will not appeal his eight-meeting ban and the continued run of suspensions for senior riders. Jimmy Ting incurred an eight-meeting ban for reckless riding on Universal Glory in the fifth race at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, joining Spencer, Soumillon, Williams, Simon Yim Hin-keung, Andreas Suborics and Olivier Doleuze on the suspended list. South African star Anton Marcus is still sidelined through injury until an unspecified time in February.
