China's wireless content providers will probably consolidate when big international companies muscle into their turf, according to a mainland executive.

More mergers and acquisitions similar to the recent deal between Internet portal Sina.com and domestic wireless content provider MeMeStar.com would probably take place, said Mark Begert, chief financial officer of Shanghai-based start-up wireless content provider Linktone.

'I think the competition landscape in China is bound to change in wireless data,' he said.

'More and more, you will find international entrants offering services with either fresh, exciting content or new technologies or brands.'

Founded in October 1999, Linktone is among the top 10 wireless content providers in the mainland, which has more than 200 million mobile phone users.

Mr Begert said big international players such as record company Sony Music and entertainment giants Hallmark and Disney were preparing to enter China's potentially lucrative wireless data market.
