The murders of former communists Rolando Kintanar and Luis Reyes this week are the latest involving high-profile victims in the Philippines. Among those killed in the past two years were congressmen Rodolfo Aguinaldo and Marshal Pimentel, and popular actress Nida Blanca. Others murdered included former communist Filemon Lagman, himself the head of a hit squad, a prominent publicist, a former military officer and two police superintendents. The publicist and his driver were kidnapped, tortured, strangled and then burned. Actress Blanca was punched, kicked and stabbed 13 times. The other victims were shot in front of onlookers. The murders remain unsolved, but the suspects include communist hitmen, hired assassins and even members of an anti-crime taskforce. Last year, the influential Makati Business Club urged President Arroyo to give top priority to law and order.
