Samsung rolled out a couple of tasty products last week, including a DVD player combined with a 40-gigabyte hard disk drive that lets users record from television or store and play several thousand CD tracks, MP3 files and JPEG images.

Combination recorders that use hard disk drives are common in Japan and South Korea, but Samsung's product, the DVD-H40C, is the first to hit Hong Kong shelves.

The DVD-H40C is a slim recorder and 40GB of storage will provide 52 hours of recording. Users can record and play back previously recorded programmes simultaneously and perform 'time slip' trickery by playing something seconds after they have begun to record it.

It can also be used as a jukebox that can play thousands of songs stored on the hard disk. The user interface is easy to use and lets you compile a music list by individual artists or by genre. It can record about 2,500 MP3 songs.

One feature called the Family Photo Album enables you to display photographs on your television set. You can upload up to 10,000 Jpegs from the hard disk drive to the photo album and view these images as a continuous slide show on TV.
