On This Day
ON this day 25 years ago: Hong Kong welcomed the ''joyful news'' after Queen Elizabeth had approved an extension of one year to Sir David Trench's five-year term of office as Governor of Hong Kong.
Sir David's term was due to expire in April 1969, but many were disappointed because the extension was not longer.
Officials said the Queen's approval to retain Sir David for another year reflected the wishes of the people of Hong Kong and that their confidence in the Governor had been taken into consideration.
Sir David's term of office will now end on April 13, 1970.
In a statement, Sir David said he much appreciated the gesture of confidence placed in him by the Queen and was happy to be able to serve the people of Hong Kong for another year.
A 34-YEAR-OLD man, making his 26th court appearance, asked a magistrate in answer to a loitering charge, what street he could walk in without fear of being arrested.
