Former Catholic priest Michael Lau Ka-yee, 42, was yesterday convicted of four child-sex offences, the first time a serving or former cleric has been prosecuted and convicted of such crimes in Hong Kong. He was arrested last May two days after the South China Morning Post revealed how the Catholic Church had failed to notify police of child- abuse cases involving its priests.

Sentencing was adjourned to February 17. Lau, who pleaded not guilty, was remanded in custody.
