As one who is involved in human rights advocacy in Hong Kong it is not uncommon for there to be some divergence of opinion with the government on a number of human rights issues. However, on the subject of corruption I find myself in full agreement with the sentiments expressed by Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa at last week's Trans Global Crime Conference in Hong Kong, on the need for increased vigilance in the fight against corruption. Every act of corruption is a violation of all our human rights particularly the rights to equal opportunity and fair treatment. Times are tough and I agree with Mr Tung that the temptation by some towards corruption may be even greater at this time. Everyone needs to help for only with public support can the battle against corruption be fought on all fronts. The Independent Commission Against Corruption's mission in corruption prevention, education and enforcement, is vital to the preservation of the rights of all of us to live in a just and fair society.
