World champions Brazil play the mainland national team in a million-dollar exhibition game on Wednesday night in Guangzhou. The five-time World Cup winners will be paid more than US$1 million (HK$7.8 million) to ensure all the stars including the three super-Rs - Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldhino - show up for the game. The match also marks the beginning of a new era for the China team. Bora Milutinovic, better known as Milu, was popular among his players for his 'happy soccer' method, but he has been replaced by no-nonsense Dutchman Arie Haan. According to the mainland media, China have entered the 'Haan Generation'. Haan, 54, is China's fourth successive overseas coach, after Milutinovic, Briton Bobby Houghton and German Klaus Schlappner. Haan, a former Netherlands international, has recalled five potential starters from England and Germany, including Manchester City defender Sun Jihai and Everton midfielder Li Tie. But there is no place in the squad for defender Fan Zhiyi - a key player for China over the past decade. English Premier League star Li, flying from his base in the north-west of England, will receive a warm welcome from home fans for the friendly re-match of last year's first-round World Cup game. That match in June ended in heartbreak for the China team and thousands of their fans who had travelled to the island of Jeju in South Korea only to witness a crushing 4-0 defeat. It was a night to remember at Hong Kong stadium, where the game was shown live on a giant screen. But China lost all their three games at the World Cup and there wasn't even a goal to celebrate. Depending on Haan's selection, Wednesday's clash could demonstrate how China's young players have responded to the harsh lessons last summer. China aren't expected to spring a surprise, but the sight of their chanting, flag-waving supporters could spur the stars of the future to shine.
