I must take issue with Chan Hung, the general secretary of the Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union ('Violence against teachers is rare', South China Morning Post, January 30), over his comments on an alleged assault case involving a Native English-speaking teacher (NET).

A far more appropriate headline would have read, 'Violence against teachers is rarely reported'.

Most Hong Kong school principals dread the very thought of their school's name appearing in police or media reports.

During my three years as a NET, I was physically assaulted on two occasions at a prevocational school.

The school management lost all sympathy with my situation when I felt that it was necessary to file a police report of each incident.

Violence in schools, like child abuse in the home, is very rarely reported in Hong Kong.
