Hainan now offers visa-free access to 21 nationalities
The tropical province of Hainan Island, a major tourist destination during Asian winters, has extended visa-free access to the citizens of another six countries.
Unlike the rest of China, where foreigners need to arrange visas before setting off - which can take up to a week - Hainan has since 2000 allowed tourists from 15 countries enter the province without travel documents for up to 15 days.
The new regulations, which see that list boosted to 21, came into effect on January 17.
People in groups of four or more can enter without a visa. Those travelling in smaller groups or individually still need a visa to enter, but may get one on arrival, saving on time and red tape.
It is hoped the scheme will boost Hainan's popularity as a destination for foreign tourists.
'It takes a lot of work to increase Hainan's visibility,' said a spokesman for the provincial Tourism Bureau's tourist management division.
