Other such partial counts are under way in Government depositories across the nation to make sure they contain all the $23,036,000,000 in gold listed on the records.

Ocean threat

Britain may consider sailing her ships in convoy in the China Sea if attacks on them by Chinese Nationalists and others continue.

Lord Reading, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, made this clear in the House of Lords to-day in reply to a question.

Lord Strabolgi (Labour) asked if the Government had considered putting British shipping and that of other friendly countries into convey if the situation got worse.

Lord Reading replied: 'If the situation gets worse, this may have to be considered, but there have only been 11 ships interfered with in six months.'

Paid holiday

Geneva (Feb 17): An annual paid holiday of two weeks for everyone employed in industry and commerce is favoured by the majority of 40 governments replying to a questionaire from the International Labour Organisation.

Most of the governments also agreed that this should be adopted in a formal reccommendation by the ILO's general conference which opens here on June 4.

Should a five-day week exist in the country, the annual paid holiday should not be less than ten working days.

Beggar offer

Hongkong (Feb 19): Mr Hin-shing Lo at Central yesterday cautioned a woman, Mak Fung, aged 77, for begging and then gave her $5.

Mak was found in Hollywood Road near Pound Lane.

Import orgy

London (Feb 17): Australia's latest import relaxations are useful rather than far reaching.

They release GBP40 million of Australian business to be shared among nearly all supplying countries (excluding only dollar countries and Japan) over 12 months starting April 1 (reaching Australia mostly in the 12 months starting July 1). During her import orgy before her cuts in March, Australia was taking GBP35 million of goods each month from Britain alone.
