Last year saw Visa International increase the number of cards issued on the mainland by 53.6 per cent, to 590,000. Sale volume stood at US$415 million, up 96 per cent. Sales last year involving cards it issued in Hong Kong edged up 2 per cent to US$13 billion. The average expenditure per card, however fell to US$1,866 from US$1,976. The total number of cards in circulation in Hong Kong was steady at seven million.
