The University of Hong Kong (HKU) stole the overall championship from the Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), Chai Wan, at the Joint College Fencing Competition last weekend. Ten tertiary institutes participated in the two-day competition, held at Flora Ho Sports Centre at HKU. HKU, with 626 points, defeated last year's overall champions IVE (438 points) and strong rivals City University (CityU) (436 points), though they only earned two titles - the same number as IVE and one less than CityU. The chairperson of the competition's committee, Eric Lau, said: 'HKU had sent more people to participate in the competition and they also had better fencers.' He said while most of the first three places were taken up by IVE and CityU, the fifth to 16th places were mostly occupied by HKU players.
