About 200 drivers of diesel trucks and buses yesterday staged a protest with their vehicles and called on the government to abolish or cut the duty on diesel.

They said this would help to speed up the economic recovery and relieve the public's burden.

The drivers, representing various transport operators ranging from cross-border trucks to minibuses, drove into a car park on the Tamar site from different parts of Hong Kong.

Wong Kei, a spokesman for the drivers, said the operators were worried about a sharp rise in the price of diesel following the recent surge in international oil prices.

He said that abolition of the duty would have only a minimal impact on the general revenue of the government.

'The government only pockets about $600 million from the diesel duty a year. It is very insignificant to its total revenue. But a reduction could help more than 120,000 drivers and the general public,' he said.
