AFTER LEAVING ETON, then Cambridge University, Henry Howard-Sneyd spent a year 'doing various jobs'.

He then decided that the most important thing - given that you spend such a large percentage of your waking hours working - was your career choice.

With that in mind, he joined Sotheby's in London in 1989. 'It's endlessly fascinating. You meet incredible people and we're constantly handling the most wonderful and beautiful things. I can't imagine anything better.'

Now he is the auction house's managing director for China and Southeast Asia (and has been since December 2000), Mr Howard-Sneyd wines and dines collectors all over the region and handles priceless works of art.

The Informer found out whether the 38-year-old has tastes to match the price tags of his employer's Ming vases and Picasso paintings.
