Fourteen Hong Kong delegates to China's top advisory body are expected to be elected as members of its standing committee. This is an increase of two on the 12 standing committee members from Hong Kong during the ninth session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
CPPCC vice-chairman Henry Fok Ying-tung said the increase indicated that Hong Kong was highly valued by the central government.
There are 2,238 delegates to the CPPCC, with 175 from Hong Kong. Mr Fok and another 14 Hong Kong delegates are on the list for the 325-strong presidium, released yesterday. They are expected to be elected to the CPPCC standing committee later in the session. Victor Li Tzar-kuoi, eldest son of tycoon Li Ka-shing, and executive councillor Leung Chun-ying are among the Hong Kong delegates who are expected to join the standing committee.
