I refer to the letters of Carmen Boudreau and David Linstead, which appeared in the South China Morning Post of February 17 and February 22, complaining about noise from the Sheung Wan Gala Point at night.

The Sheung Wan Gala Point is an amusement park-cum-bazaar project launched last October by the Central and Western District Office with a view to boosting the local community economy. In operating this venue, the successful tenderer is required to comply with regulations, including those related to the environment (noise, effluence, air, etc).

In terms of noise from stage performances, the operator has been well briefed on the permissible level during daytime and night-time and has been provided with specific guidelines on good practices. Very soon after Ms Boudreau's and Mr Linstead's complaint letters appeared, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) was in touch with the operator with a view to reducing the noise level, especially during the evening and after 11 pm.

While the EPD will monitor the situation at Gala Point in the light of the above complaints, members of the public affected by excessive noise can call the Gala Point Hotline (tel 2858 3930) for immediate remedial action and if they require further assistance, the EPD Customer Services Hotline (tel 2838 3111).
