Defending division one inter-school athletics champions La Salle College are poised to retain their title tomorrow after a strong performance in Tuesday's penultimate day two put them in pole position.
La Salle have 193 points overall, and it will take a Herculean effort from Diocesan Boys' School, second on 188, in the crucial final day to snatch the coveted trophy.
According to La Salle principal Brother Thomas Lavin, his school are in the driver's seat, and only an unexpected disaster could stop them from winning now.
'We are in a good position, and if performances on the final day are similar to those in the heats, then we will win. We will take a close look at where we must ensure we take full points on Friday, and where we can sneak some,' said Lavin.
One person they can count on to pick up full points is grade B distance runner, Ricco Chan Ye-ko. The 16-year-old took maximum points on Tuesday as he smashed his own 3,000 metre grade B boys record in a time of 9 minutes 38.11 seconds - over 30 seconds clear of his closest rival. Tomorrow he will have his sights set on the 1,500m record (4 mins, 24.15 secs) he set last year.
La Salle's Yeung Yu-wang equalled the grade C high jump record of 1.65m, but was then eclipsed by Ng Shun-ho from TWGHs Lui Yun Choy Memorial College who leapt 1.70m.
