IBM is finding it difficult not to gloat over figures from IDC that say it has more than half of the server market in Hong Kong - a first for any vendor in this area.
Dominic Tong, software and systems brand executive for IBM Hong Kong, quoted the numbers from an IDC report.
'We reached 50.1 per cent of overall server market share for the quarter ending on 31 December 2002. This is the first time anyone has achieved that,' he said.
'IBM has been number one in overall servers for quite some time. This time, however, we were number one in every market: mainframe, Unix and Intel-based servers. In each of these categories, we led the number two by quite a lot.'
Mr Tong was particularly pleased with these numbers because last year was not kind for servers.
'There's no disguising the fact that 2002 was a tough year to be in the server business. While the overall Hong Kong market revenues were down 17.5 per cent for the year, according to IDC, we were able to maintain a healthy business by taking share away from our competitors,' he said.
'It was a balanced performance across all our server families, which shows the Hong Kong market understands and appreciates the strengths of the IBM eServer brand.'
