Just as he is about to get the biggest international break of his career, tough guy actor Simon Yam Tat-wah plans to disappear. When Tomb Raider 2 is released, Yam, who plays a major role in the film, will be back at school catching up on his studies. 'I've booked a two-month full-time course where I'll study English and traditional Chinese ink painting,' the star reveals in this month's Winner's Magazine. 'I loved painting as a kid, but I came from a poor family and never got time to study. So now I fit it in when I can.' Yam, 47, whose 130 movies have generally ended with him being killed by the hero, has found his bad guy image holds him back in Hong Kong. But on the mainland, where they clearly like their heroes more rough and ready, he is a huge star. The actor has become a major style icon and a ubiquitous billboard pitchguy. Last year, he even launched his self-designed Simon Yam Sunglasses. Ideally accessorised, one imagines, by a toothpick.
