The film: Those who caught the local version of the David Mamet play (which enjoyed a sold-out season) will bound out to snap up this 10th anniversary release of the Hollywood original. Director James Foley (Reckless) wisely brought Mamet along to adapt his own play for the screen - and they even introduce a new character from the original text (wonderfully portrayed by Alec Baldwin). It is a savage look at the human condition at its most desperate.
A bunch of down-and-out real estate agents are fighting to keep their heads above water as the market slows - and so do their careers. They all react differently to the pressures they feel, especially when given a contest to prove their worth.
The most telling performances comes from Al Pacino as the hotshot Ricky Roma and Jack Lemmon as Shelley 'The Machine' Levine, two men at opposite ends of their career trajectories.
