Kid Loco Another Late Night (Azuli) With an abundance of tired, over-priced selections around, there were plenty of reasons to steer clear of compilations - until some bright spark came up with the idea of getting respected DJs and artists to compile their own. Affording instant credibility as well as squeezing in a few good, and often obscure, tunes, the Another Late Night series has, along with distant cousins such as DJ Kicks, given the whole concept a kiss of life. The seventh in the series finds French master of downbeat cool Kid Loco fusing funked-up, scratchy beats with a feel for the cinematic. Dramatic, evocative moments are plentiful, with Gabor Szabo's sweeping Mizrab setting the tone, whisking the listener off to a desert highway before the gimmickry of The Herbaliser's Hard Stuff provides a brief diversion. Uplink's mighty Stratus strides into the set like a steel giant, a colossus of crashing cymbals and rhythms morphing from the introduction provided by PIL's Religion 1. With oldies such as John Lucien and Frankie Valentine rubbing shoulders with the likes of DJ Crystal, this is one late night worth staying up for.
