Banking giant HSBC has teamed up with Sun Microsystems to establish a Java Centre of Excellence in Hong Kong, the first facility of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region.
This announcement is expected to usher in the creation of more than a dozen such centres inside large enterprises in various industries across Greater China this year, Sun officials told the South China Morning Post last week.
'The Greater China market will drive the adoption of these centres throughout Asia,' Sun Asia-Pacific software services director John Cummins said. 'We expect as many as 15 more Java Centres of Excellence to be set up by organisations in Greater China this year.'
To date, there are seven such centres in North America, such as in Ford Motor Company.
These centres are designed to help large enterprises advance the capabilities of their in-house software developers using Sun's Java programming language.
At HSBC, the Java Centre was created to support the software development requirements of the bank's Hong Kong-based corporate, investment banking and markets (CIBM) IT department.
