A tourist has had $15,000 refunded after receiving the Post's help
A Nathan Road camera shop exposed by the South China Morning Post for overcharging tourists has struck again - charging a tourist $29,000 for a camera sold elsewhere for $15,000 less.
Elegance Camera and Video at 27-33 Nathan Road gave a full refund to tourist Carlos Dieter, who was overcharged last Monday, after the Post took his case to the Consumer Council.
The camera shop near the Peninsula Hotel sold Mr Dieter the camera just two days before it was raided by police following an operation in which an officer posed as a tourist. Twelve men in the shop aged 21 to 43 were arrested for allegedly obtaining property by deception. They were released on bail.
The raid came after eight separate complaints were made against the shop by tourists this year alone. The Post earlier highlighted how a holidaying Irish couple had paid $15,000 at the shop for a camera actually worth $3,300.
Mr Dieter said: 'When I saw the story in the Post about the arrests, I couldn't believe that it was the same shop. I didn't know what I should do,' he said.
