'THEY'RE BASICALLY TELLING US TO STAY HERE AND DIE'

Why you can trust SCMP

Mr Lee of Amoy Gardens, Ngau Tau Kok, is one of 241 tenants quarantined by the Hong Kong government. His family of four is being forced to stay in their home from 6am on Monday until midnight on Wednesday, April 9. For now, members of his family show no symptoms of atypical pneumonia. In fear of retaliation from his neighbours, Mr Lee would only disclose his surname. Here are his feelings about living under quarantine: The main thing is we don't want to be trapped here. They [government officials] don't know what the cause of the outbreak is - whether it is airborne or from the water source.

We're okay now, but we don't know if we'll fall ill in a few days.

Why can't they send us to another site? They're basically telling us to wait here and die.

These top government officials don't have brains. They should have people go to the affected flats and see what's wrong with them. You might find some dead rats there, who knows? But they could be clues.

We have four people in my family. My two daughters are in secondary school and we pass the time by watching television, listening to the radio and reading magazines and newspapers. We eat in separate rooms of the flat.

We do everything separately. We only take off our face masks when each of us is in a room by ourselves. My daughters are especially careful because they don't want me and my wife to get the disease. They said we're old and that it would take us longer to recover.

We don't talk to our neighbours because everyone is afraid of contracting the disease from one another. We're living in fear every day.
