He was an icon of Hong Kong Canto-pop, and he was everyone's 'Gor Gor' (older brother). For the past two decades, Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing has brought great memories to Hong Kongers of all ages through his films and music

'We sang Leslie's songs for teachers. When we were at secondary two we performed Chase and Monica at a graduation ceremony. He's really funny as an actor. I liked his performance in All's Well, End's Well and It's A Wonderful Life, though Farewell My Concubine is a better film. The radio tributes only play the sad songs he sang. I want to hear his upbeat tunes, such as Monica. That music video was great.'

'Even though I didn't grow up in Hong Kong and Mr Cheung didn't mean as much to me as the next person, having the chance to see him perform with Anita Mui [Yim-fong, Canto-pop diva] was rivetting and entirely important! At Mui's concert last year, Mr Cheung came out as a surprise guest performer and the crowd went wild - there they were, two of Hong Kong's most revered veteran performers, feeding off each other exactly as they were famous for. And it was rivetting for me as an outsider to experience that.'

'He was one of my idols. I started listening to his songs from the early days, like Monica and H2O. He was a genuine star, someone you would admire but dare not to get close to. Whereas the stars nowadays are like your next door neighbour. His feminine image was memorable. It's such a loss that he died, but I don't agree with the way he chose to end his life.'
