An unusual method of preventing severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) is being circulated by Tibetan lama Zopa Rinpoche.
The California-based monk's 20-page booklet Practices To Counteract The Sars Virus recommends painting a series of signs on the palm, including the lha (below left), which insures against getting the disease, and the hrih (right), which wards off infections.
It also outlines mantras and rituals - such as the wrathful fire puja - which can ward off and cure disease. However, the lama warns these rituals must be performed 'not just for yourself but for the benefit of all sentient beings', which Hong Kongers - not known for their generosity - might find hard to do.
On the upside, those who inscribe the hrih not just on their palm but on their forehead will apparently receive 'all the wealth you desire'.
