Gun threat prompts manhunt on lantau
Officers wearing bullet-proof vests yesterday searched for a man who escaped with $2,000 and two mobile phones from a house on Lantau after threatening a 50-year-old man and his maid with what appeared to be a pistol. The raider first encountered the Filipino domestic helper and ordered her to take him to the master bedroom, where he threatened the man with the pistol. He then fled through the rear door of the Discovery Bay home shortly after 3.30am. There was no report of any casualties. Police believe that the robber was aged between 25 and 30 and was about 1.7 metres tall.
Three arrested in raids over fake brand paint
Customs officers arrested a businessman and two others following the seizure of 3,280 cans of paint in a territory-wide operation. The cans carried a forged ICI trademark. The consignment, with a face value of $720,000, was seized after officers raided two distributors in Kowloon Bay, a godown in Fanling and 13 other outlets.The three suspects, aged between 30 and 42, were released on bail pending further investigation.

A large haul of illegal fuel thought to be from the mainland has been seized on board a tugboat in Aberdeen, a Customs official said. Customs Diesel Oil Enforcement Division chief Lai Wai-hing said 20,000 litres of petrol, worth about $240,000 in Hong Kong, was discovered during a raid on an abandoned shipyard in Shum Wan Road. Officers arrested four men and seized four lorries and pumping equipment at the scene. Mr Lai said he suspected the illegal fuel was from the mainland and that it had been transferred to the tugboat from another vessel in Hong Kong waters. The four men, aged between 30 and 40, were released on bail.
