THE organisers of an international medical conference in Hong Kong have lowered the registration fees for 150 young Chinese surgeons to encourage their participation in the event. ''The original fee was US$600 [about HK$4,649] per delegate, and although charitable organisations sponsor delegates from poorer countries, the sponsorship is not enough,'' said the University of Hong Kong's Professor John Wong, who is also chairman of the local organising committee. ''We are helping the 150 young Chinese surgeons since our main aim is educational,'' he said. The 35th World Congress of the International Society of Surgery will launch International Surgical Week on Monday at the Convention and Exhibition Centre. More than 2,500 highly skilled surgeons from 75 countries will attend the conference, held once every two years.
