The festive season has come early at the Princess Margaret Hospital in the shape of a Christmas tree in the foyer of the block housing some of the most critically ill Sars patients.

Hundreds of cards hang from the tree in view of intensive care unit staff. The messages convey people's appreciation of the doctors, nurses and health-care workers who are putting their lives on the line every day.

Samples of the tributes read: 'A salute to our medical people - our life guards and our lifesavers'; 'Thanks for all you have done'; 'Good luck, good health and God bless you'.

The tree stands alongside a tribute wall displaying messages of support and encouragement, as well as news cuttings of the outbreak.

A hospital cleaner taking a break in the triage area of the temporarily closed accident and emergency unit said she was scared, but added: 'We work very hard, but so is everybody, what else can we do?'
