Japanese electronics giant Sony will provide free repair of battery packs used with its popular Cyber-shot digital cameras.

Sony last week said there was a problem with the packs, but early reports that it would recall the affected digital cameras were incorrect.

Sony Hong Kong spokeswoman Fiona Chan said the problem surfaced after users complained about the unusually short battery life of Cyber-shot DSC-P1 cameras.

The DSC-P1 was introduced in October 2000.

'Some users of the digital still camera [DSC-P1] have reported that the indicator may show that the battery is fully charged, although charging is not completed.

'This could result in shorter camera operation time,' Ms Chan said.

She said the problem occurred 'depending on the environment where the digital still camera is being used and stored'.

Battery life was finite and the performance of the lithium ion battery pack declined when the battery pack was repeatedly charged and discharged, used frequently or when the temperature dropped, she said.

Sony said it would provide a free diagnosis service and, if necessary, free repair to improve the consistency of battery operations of the affected model.

Customers who wish to take advantage of the free service should contact Sony customer service centres for further details.

An estimated 500,000 units have been sold worldwide, including to customers in Japan and the United States, Sony said.



Sony offers free repair of Cyber-shot battery packs
