FLORAL arrangement has played a vital part in folk festivals, religious ceremonies, public celebrations of all kinds, and courtships.
Line, form, colour and texture are the basic design elements. Later they are arranged into a harmonious unit based on the principles of design - balance, contrast, rhythm, scale, proportion, harmony and dominance.
Flower arrangement includes not only the flowers but also the container that holds them and the base on which the vessel may rest. If an accessory, such as a figurine, is included, that too becomes a part of the total design.
The composition should relate in textural quality to its frame of reference, which might be wood, a glass tabletop or a linen cloth. It should also be in harmony with the room's style for which it was planned.
In Hong Kong, there are a number of places offering courses on flower arrangements.
The British & American Floral Art School has two kinds of floral decoration courses - one awarded with American certificates and one without.
