Enough suits to last 13 days are donated by Post readers
People across Hong Kong yesterday sent messages of gratitude to medical staff battling the Sars outbreak, while their donations pushed Project Shield through the $3 million mark.
Despite it being a Sunday, by the time phone lines closed last night 430 transactions totalling $679,000 had been made on the Project Shield hotline and via scmp.com.
With accumulated donations of $3.43 million, there is now enough money to buy 137,388 protective suits - enough to keep every medical worker treating severe acute respiratory syndrome patients safe for 13 days.
Following delivery of the first batch of the protective suits on Saturday, thousands more will be flown in by Cathay Pacific in the next few weeks.
At the top of yesterday's donations was a $250,000 pledge made by David Ho under the name of his company, Central Textile.
