Thousands of Beijing office workers have begun tele-commuting to avoid the streets or crowded buildings.

Managers of several firms say between one and two-thirds of their workforces are staying at home or rotating in and out of the office.

Equipped with company-issued computers, employees set up shop in their apartments, send their work in via e-mail and call the office once or twice a day.

'It's what everyone wants to do,' said An Weihong, senior public relations manager of Motorola, which employs 12,000 people in Beijing. Half the company's workforce stays at home one day, then lets the other half sit out the next day. 'They don't want that many people in the building,' Ms An said. 'It's a busy office.'

At some companies, such as Hewlett-Packard, which employs 1,300 people, workers are only required to show up for events such as company meetings.
