Man's Heritage: Saving A Species - Evacuation Penguin

Pearl, 8pm

In June 2000, the MV Treasure, an iron ore ship, sank off the western cape of South Africa. She was carrying 1,460 tonnes of oil, nearly all of which leaked into the ocean. An oil slick measuring one square kilometre engulfed the beaches and fishing grounds of a colony of 20,000 jackass, or African, penguins, and the first badly oiled seabird struggled to the beach hours after the sinking. Evacuation Penguin follows the massive rescue effort that was conducted, with more than 20,000 volunteers helping to remove and clean the stricken birds, which were temporarily housed in an abandoned train yard close to Cape Town.
