Although the bun-tower racing days are a thing of the past thanks to health and safety regulations, the festival still makes for a great day out if you can deal with the crowds. Dating back to the Qing dynasty, the four-day event honours Pak Tai, the 'Emperor of Heaven'. The huge bun towers are a spectacle in themselves, matched only by the parade featuring colourful floats, lion dances and children dressed as mythological heroes, who appear to mysteriously float over the crowd's heads. A day of colour, fun and tradition, the festival has never been cancelled - not even during the Japanese occupation. Tue-Fri with main parade on Thu. Inquiries: Hong Kong Tourist Board on 2508 1234
