Q Would you treat an ex-patient of Sars any differently?

I refer to the article titled 'Loneliness, fear and anger - my personal journey through Sars' (South China Morning Post, May 2), about a male nurse's experience with severe acute respiratory syndrome.

Since reading this article, I have become very frightened - not by the disease but by the so-called cure.

The side effects caused by Ribavirin and the cocktail of steroids described in the article are horrific. They are more frightening than any description I have heard of the illness itself. Apart from the immediate side effects, there are serious long-term implications, including a weakened immune system, which increases the risk of catching other serious illnesses.

Scientists in the US and Canada have actually declared that it is questionable whether this combination of drugs even works for a coronavirus. What are they using in these other countries? Why are we not given any choices here? Why are even people with the mildest form being given this same cocktail, ruining their bodies for the rest of their lives? Why is the government not researching and promoting more information on preventive and natural medicine?

And for those who have a mild form of Sars, why can't they be given products that enhance their immune system, instead of this dreaded cocktail which knocks their system back further? They are in isolation anyway, so there is no chance of spreading the infection.
