CANTO-POP SINGER Jade Kwan Sum-yin has a busy work schedule lined up for today, but she is still going to make time to celebrate Mother's Day. She has a lot to thank her mother for. Not only did she single-handedly raise Jade and her brother, she also spent $1 million helping her daughter achieve fame.

Kwan was signed to BMA records two years ago, but because the record company was focusing on other talent, she was left idle. Other people might have given up, but Kwan stuck to her dream, and had her full-range preparation for stardom sponsored by her mother.

'I listened to lots of music and figured out my musical direction. I learned to play the saxophone, practised singing and songwriting, lost weight and had make-up and hairstyling training. I even analysed how other stars answered press questions and which angle of my face would look the best,' says the 23-year-old.

'I think my mum spent about $1 million on me, because during that period I didn't work at all.'

This February, Kwan took her mother on holiday to Japan. It was the first time she had the chance to treat her mother, who runs a beauty salon business in Hong Kong.

'We haven't been living together for 10 years because she is based in Hong Kong and I was in Vancouver,' says Kwan. 'We didn't see each other much in the past but we were close. We had no secrets. I'm so glad that we can live together now. I really treasure this.'
