I am writing a song about the health workers who were on the Sars frontline. The producer of the show I am doing for RTHK asked me to write something for a CD celebrating life. I think the health workers have been very brave because even though they knew that they could be in danger they still chose to stay and take care of the Sars patients. I have not finished the song yet but as I write it I will think about all the people who sacrificed their safety for the welfare of others.
I always wear a mask and wash my hands regularly. In addition to alcohol wipes I carry a bottle of waterless hand wash around with me. My maid cleans my house every day. Also, every day before I do my radio show people at the station clean the microphone.
I am worried but I think I'll be fine if I am careful. I guess my parents are a little older and more at risk. You just need to remain alert. I never considered taking a holiday to avoid Sars. I did, however, visit the United States a few weeks ago. At the time they had not implemented any health checks at the airports. When I got on the plane I wiped my seat down with alcohol wipes. During the flight I kept my mask on except for when I ate. During the crisis I've seen the bad side of many people. On the MTR you see people who purposely take off their masks when they cough. When you ask someone to put their mask on they will just yell at you and say that they don't care if they die. It really upsets me to see people behaving like that. Many of my friends say they have seen people behaving like that. Some people still spit in the street. They don't even care about basic personal hygiene. You don't know who is infected.
I think the Sars outbreak has really affected Hong Kong. I know people overseas will be prejudiced against us. But as we handled the thing so badly we deserve to be treated like that.
