Project Shield - the South China Morning Post's appeal to raise money to protect Hong Kong's frontline health workers - has placed a second major order for equipment to help fight Sars.
An order totalling $5.34 million has been placed through the Hospital Authority to buy 776,000 disposable fluid-resistant gowns, 140,000 eye-shield frames, 260,000 eye-shield lenses, 64,000 face shields, 5,000 pairs of goggles and 500,000 surgical masks.
The order for the supplies, most of which will be delivered before the end of this month, were placed after consultation with the Hospital Authority and based on a priority list of urgently needed equipment.
On Saturday, Project Shield delivered 10,000 protective suits that were flown into Hong Kong by Cathay Pacific in a separate order paid for by the fund.
Project Shield, launched on April 25, collected more than $17,115,965 in just 12 days. The appeal for public donations has now been suspended but companies and organisations that have begun fundraising activities are encouraged to complete them and advise the Post's marketing department.
More than 10,000 individuals, organisations and companies have contributed to Project Shield. The charity project has been accepted by the Inland Revenue Department for donations to be tax deductible from April 25. Requests for receipts can be made at scmp.com.
