More than 220 businesses and organisations have pledged to meet new cleanliness standards as part of the battle against Sars.
MTR Corp, Maxim's Caterers and Cafe de Coral are some of the companies which have volunteered to join the hygiene charter set up by Operation Unite, a campaign formed last month to fight against the outbreak.
Health experts said keeping good public hygiene was a way to prevent the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome.
'Sars is an infectious disease. There's no better way to combat an infectious disease than through public health education,' said Sydney Chung Sheung-chee, dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
'If we can break the mode of spread from person to person, then we will win this war. It's everyone's responsibility.
'This is a golden opportunity for us to upgrade civic awareness and public health awareness.'
