The project will bring stress and environmental damage, neighbours say in a survey before today's funding decision
An overwhelming majority of Peng Chau residents are opposed to a planned 'superjail' on neighbouring Hei Ling Chau, according to a survey by an environmental group.
About 87 per cent of respondents surveyed by the Green Peng Chau Association said Hei Ling Chau was the wrong site for such a prison and 83 per cent said the money would be better spent on developing tourism.
They said the jail would cause them psychological stress and have a negative impact on the local economy, the fishing industry, the environment, tourism and property prices.
The chairwoman of the Green Peng Chau Association, Sannie Chan Lit-fong, said islanders' views must be considered before any decision was taken on whether to build the $12 billion prison.
The survey covered 232 local residents and 90 visitors to Peng Chau between May 9 and 11.
