DREAM TEAM REUNITED

Tom Hilditch

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II, anyone? The dream team that helped put together China's biggest box office hit is reconvening.

Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh Choo Kheng (above with Chow) have signed up to star in Hua Mulan, a US$30 million (HK$234 million) historical epic, to be directed by Peter Pau Tak-hei, who won an Oscar for Crouching Tiger's cinematography, and to be written by Wang Huiling, Crouching Tiger's scriptwriter.

The Chinese-language film tells the story of Hua Mulan who, after pretending to be a man so she can join the army and replace her ageing father, rises to the rank of general. Chow will play General Li, who recognises Mulan's talents and boosts her through the ranks, but later finds himself falling for her.

In a sign of box office hopes for the movie, Chow is apparently being paid an unprecedented HK$117 million for his role (about 15 times the budget of most Hong Kong movies). Production for the movie begins on August 22 at locations including Qinghai, Zhejiang and Beijing.
