THE Chinatown Mall in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley is to undergo an A$400,000 (about HK$2.08 million) facelift and a big line up of multi-million-dollar projects that were put on the back-burner by recession have resurfaced in the city.
Among steps being taken to rejuvinate the area will be the relocation of the Chinese Club, to be known as the Happy Valley Club, to Fortitude Valley.
The relocation will be complete before Chinese New Year next February.
The Chinatown Mall and surrounding restaurants are expected to reap the benefits.
The new Brisbane City Council plan is for a more open, landscaped mall with a strong Chinese theme, rather than the existing mall design which is generally considered not entirely traditional in architecture - a fact that has been attributed to hindering development over the years.
Better public safety and a cut in long-term maintenance costs in the mall, running at about A$300,000 a year, will be achieved by the reduction in the number of structures.
Chinatown's Eddie Liu has confirmed that premises have already been established for the new club in a two-storey building which is part of the existing Valley Plaza complex.
