THE Hong Kong FA last night gave their backing to an end-of-season Super League worth $1 million in prize-money, writes Jeremy Walker.
The FA council accepted a proposal to stage a six-team competition involving the top four clubs in the First Division and two sides entered by sponsors. This would enable potential sponsors to import club sides from Europe to take on the best in Hong Kong.
The council could not agree on the distribution of prize-money, however, with one proposal suggesting $700,000 for the champions, $300,000 for the runners-up and nothing for the other four teams and a second proposal offering $600,000 to the champions, $200,000 to the runners-up and $50,000 each to the other four sides.
Meanwhile, the Asian Football Confederation have given Hong Kong's South China and China's Dalian further time to play their two-leg Asian Cup-Winners' Cup first round tie.
The AFC have told the clubs they should play the matches between October 1 and October 20.
