Northwest Frontier Province provincial assembly members met for a second day yesterday to continue debate on a motion from the ruling six-party religious alliance that would enforce Islamic law in this conservative Pakistani region that borders Afghanistan.
Beside the sharia initiative, the alliance also is expected to present for debate the Hisba Act, which would create vice and virtue departments similar to that of the religious police in Taleban-ruled Afghanistan.
'We will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to create an Islamic society that will bring peace and justice to human beings,' said Hafiz Hashmat Khan, the provincial Minister for Social Welfare.
Both motions are expected to pass easily as the alliance holds a commanding majority of 74 out 122 assembly seats.
'No government has had the vision to address those issues plaguing our society. We have prepared the revolutionary plan aimed at eradicating the cause of social, economic and other evils,' said Mohmmmad Kurshid, of the Information Department.
The Sharia Implementation Act, as the proposal is known as, would make Islamic law supreme and covers all aspect of daily life.
